Atavisms are traits of ancient ancestors that were reproductively successful in the ancient ancestor's past environment, showing up in modern day offspring. In order for a trait to be considered an atavism the child's parents can't have the trait and neither can recent ancestors. The most well known form of atavism is being born one race but having the traits of another due to ancient ancestors being a different race than the current offspring's, leading to the racepill.[1][2]
