Tertullian
Tertullian was an early Christian theologian who lived in the 100s CE, and who can be seen as a Christocel or perhaps a volcel, as he did not marry. His importance to Christian thought can be perceived by the fact of him being the first person to coin the term 'trinitas' (trinity). Tertullian has been criticized for his 'misogyny', and has been compared to "an incel screeching on 4chan".[1]
Opinions about women[edit | edit source]
Tertullian advocated for a patriarchal and traditional form of the family, and he can also be seen as attacking female vanity and hypergamy. He criticized women for their use of make-up, authoring a tract entitled De cultu feminarum (On the Ornaments of Women), which outlined his idea of the proper apparel and deportment of Christian women.
Tertullian also believed that women caused the problems of this world in general, writing the following (referring to the biblical figure of Eve, and women by extension):
"Woman is a temple built upon a sewer."
"The sentence of God lives upon you in this age. You are the devil’s gateway; you are she who first violated the forbidden tree and broke the law of God. It was you who coaxed your way around him whom the devil had not the force to attack. With what ease you shattered that image of God: Man! Because of the death you merited, even the Son of God had to die ... Woman, you are the gateway to hell."
