Incel, is an academic sociological term that is short for and means, involuntary celibacy, a life circumstance. Specifically, it is the life circumstance of, "single without choosing to be so". And so it is not a community, subculture, organized group, movement, or a philosophy. It is just as much a 'community' as the 'involuntary impoverished' are a community, and just as much a subculture as trans people are a subculture, so, it is neither. Individual philosophies like the blackpill or subcultures like 4chan culture emerge on some, but not all, forums dedicated to involuntary celibates and go in and out of fashion. Inceldom was first academically recognized as a sociological phenomenon by the Donnelly Study. The Donnelly Study defined incels as all adults who would like to have a sexual or romantic relationship with someone of the gender they are attracted to but can't find one for free for 6 months or more, and then remain celibate.[[File:67.jpg|thumb|right|
What people think incels want
vs. what they really want
‎]] The date may seem arbitrary, but there had to be a cutoff point, and sociologist Denise Donnelly chose 6 months as that factored in that almost everyone goes without sexual intimacy for months, but it is only unusual after a few months. Most people who self-identify as incel are not standardcels as they cannot find *anyone* willing to have sex with them for free. This wiki is not an extension of any academic project, forum, or subculture, but rather a cataloging of people, theories, and activities that relate in any way to the academic term: "incel". The first lexicographer to define "incel", defined it as a gender-neutral life cirumstance rather than a subculture. Its unabbreviated form was coined in 1739 by Antoine Banier in his book on ancient Greek mythology. Inceldom overlaps but is distinct from 'sexual frustration', in that an involuntary celibate may simply accept their incelibacy and not feel bad about it.

Can't an incel just see a hooker?
Frequenting prostitutes or being a sugar daddy/mommy does not count as a sexual, romantic, or even social relationship, but rather a financial relationship, as the relationship remains without sex/romance/sociability, but not without money. Even if it did count as a sexual or romantic relationship, most self-identified incels cannot afford it on a regular basis. Also, many escortcels frequently characterize prostitution as not a fully sexual experience as it usually lacks sexual validation. Legalization of prostitution can mitigate the side effects of inceldom but it does not constitute a sexual relationship.

Love-shy vs. incel
Love-shyness is the fear of romantic or sexual relationships. It is possible for a person to be both incel and love-shy, and most are both to some degree or another. For instance, a person could originally be incel, then suffer large numbers of turn downs, and eventually become love-shy and unable to approach.
