Incel, is short for involuntarily celibate, a term describing a life circumstance. It is not a subculture, movement, or a philosophy. 'Involuntarily celibate' is an valid academic sociological term coined by Antoine Banier and popularized in academia by the Donnelly Study, referring to people who would like to have a sexual or romantic partner but can't find one for 6 months or more, and then remain celibate, reduced to nonredamancy. The date may seem arbitrary, but there had to be a cutoff point, and Denise Donnelly chose 6 months as that factored in that some sexually active people go weeks without sex, and people start to worry about their sex lives after a certain period of time longer than that period. The only reason that incels or incelibates use an abbreviated form of the longer term is that "incel" has only two syllables, thus is easier to say. "Incelibate" has four syllables, again easy to say. In contrast, the term "involuntarily celibate person" has 11 syllables, which is much harder to say. [[File:67.jpg|thumb|right|
What people think incels want
vs. what they really want
‎]]
Therefore the term "incel" is to "involuntary celibate" the same thing as what "lb" is to "pound". "Incelibate" is to "involuntarily celibate" the same as what "USA" is to the "United States of America". Just because a longer term is abbreviated doesn't mean that the definition has changed. So in a nutshell, "incel" is simply an abbreviation of the term "involuntarily celibate".

Incel overlaps but is distinct from 'sexual frustration', in that an involuntary celibate may simply accept their incelibacy and not feel bad about it.
Incel, is short for and means, involuntarily celibate, colloquially known as, "can't get laid for a long time", a term describing a life circumstance. It is not a subculture, organized group, movement, or a philosophy. Although, individual philosophies, memes, or subcultures like the blackpill sometimes emerge on individual forums dedicated to involuntary celibates and go in and out of fashion. 'Involuntarily celibate' or 'incel' is the particular phrasing of, "can't get laid", that entered academia as an academic sociological term. This happened through the Donnelly Study. The Donnelly Study defined incels as people who would like to have a sexual or romantic relationship with someont of the gender they are attracted to but can't find one for free for 6 months or more, and then remain celibate.[[File:67.jpg|thumb|right|
What people think incels want
vs. what they really want
‎]] The date may seem arbitrary, but there had to be a cutoff point, and sociologist Denise Donnelly chose 6 months as that factored in that almost everyone goes without sexual intimacy for months, but it is only unusual after a few months. Most people who self-identify as incel are not standardcels as they cannot find *anyone* willing to have sex with them for free. The first lexicographer to define "incel", defined it as a gender-neutral life cirumstance rather than a subculture. Its unabbreviated form was coined in 1739 by Antoine Banier in his book on the history of Ancient Athens. Inceldom overlaps but is distinct from 'sexual frustration', in that an involuntary celibate may simply accept their incelibacy and not feel bad about it

Frequent visiting of prostitutes or sugar-daddying does not count as a sexual or romantic relationship, but rather a financial relationship. Even if it did count as a sexual partnership, most self-identified incels cannot afford it on a regular basis. Many incels frequently characterize prostitution as not a fully sexual experience as it usually lacks sexual validation. Legalization of prostitution can mitigate the side effects of inceldom but no implementation of it so far has addressed inceldom itself as it usually takes the form of a service rather than a partnership.

Love-shyness is the fear of romantic or sexual relationships. It is possible for a person to be both incel and love-shy, and most are both to some degree or another. For instance, a person could originally be incel, then suffer large numbers of turn downs, and eventually become love-shy and unable to approach.
