Die große Liebe (The Great Love) is a German love drama film produced in 1942 and was among the most successful films in the Third Reich.

Plot[edit | edit source]

The notoriously lucky Chadlite Oberleutnant Paul Wendlandt, a Luftwaffe fighter pilot, falls in love with the Danish Stacylite singer Hanna Holberg on first sight. After her singing performance, Hanna visits friends, Paul follows her and speaks to her in the metro. After the party in her friend's flat he accompanies her home, and chance throws them further together when an air raid warning forces them to take cover in the air raid shelter; Hanna eventually reciprocates his feelings after playing hard-to-get.

Yet their budding romance is repeatedly interrupted by frequent wartime duties, jealousy from the rival older statusmaxxed yet friendzoned beta male orbiter composer Rudnitzky (who has shown interest for years, though, she didn't reciprocate his feelings; he was married at that time but already on the edge of divorce), and a string of misunderstandings and missed opportunities in their communication.

Paul keeps returning to the front, even volunteering without order, while Hanna tours Europe, and their plans for marriage are postponed again and again until Paul is sent to the brutal Eastern Front and his friend is killed. After Paul is shot down and hospitalized in the mountains, the two are finally reunited and married, the film ending on a hopeful note as bombers fly overhead.

Music[edit | edit source]
