Convicted spree killer and lifer Jason Burkett, featured along with his accomplice Michael Perry in Werner Herzog's 2011 documentary, Into the Abyss, managed to net himself a groupie wife in Melyssa Thompson-Burkett. Interviewed by Herzog, she claims his innocence even though she maintains he was "involved in some way", in the murders. Her mother and friend appeared to be very supportive of her union with Burkett. In her words, "I'm not 'that girl that falls in love with an inmate". She was also well aware of the existing phenomenon of "death row groupies" (Like that Scott Peterson who gets 100 letters a day in California), but also knows about committed, serious marriages to death row inmates that "are not disingenuous and come from their heart".
