The man was a tyrannical ruler, responsible for the deaths of up to 40 million people. Genghis came from a privileged family, but as a boy Genghis's father was killed by a rival tribe, their family descended into extreme poverty, Ghengis was briefly enslaved and later escaped thanks to the assistance of a poor servant family (who he presumably impressed enough to make them give him their aid), and Ghengis became hellbent on revenge. Both his mother, Hoelun, and his beloved first wife, Borte, were victims of [[bridenapping]], with there being rumors that he was cuckolded by the chief of a rival clan, the Merkid, during his first wife's captivity and that his oldest son Jochi wasn't actually his own. However this was only speculation. In response to the kidnapping of his wife, he raised a raiding party, attacked the rival clan (the Merkid) and in his own words "made an end of the men and their descendants and ravished those that remained".
