So to make money, they legacy media has become desperate and corrupt, running outrageous and unthoughtful news stories and op-eds.  Feigning outrage about things and then giving free publicity to the people they pretend to be outraged about. This phenomena may have been the largest contributor to the rise of various things the media claims to be upset about.

As of the 21st century, the revenues of the MSM (mainstream media) are under threat from all sides. Less people are buying newspapers in print form. newspapers in non-print form, such as online news, are also increasingly under threat with less people visiting them. These news outlets also increasingly are having to compete with non-traditional forms of news, such as by bloggers or vloggers. Furthermore, due to an increasing mistrust of the MSM, the MSM now also has to compete with alternative media. In turn, due to the fall in eyeballs, revenue from advertisers has also dropped.
