The term can apply to both men and women, however it is usually used in reference to a woman as it's easier for a woman to become an emcel in the modern dating environment. The cause of this phenomenon is a mixture of many different factors. One being hormonal birth control which depletes or suppresses Oxytocin, nicknamed 'the love chemical'. It is unknown whether this effect is permanent or temporary. Another being the development of 'hyper-casual sex culture' and speedy dating apps like Tinder, which makes it very easy for people (women in particular) to have sex repeatedly with many different partners, which eventually wears out their ability to attach to an individual emotionally through sex, leaving them unable to experience love.
